In the following, we will take a closer look at the suggestions for the configuration of the server, the functioning of the firewall, the connection methods, and the Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) on the Windows Server 2012 operating system.
A file is sent from a computer to a server or back to a PC using the widely used protocol FTP. The user can collaborate with other computers on the Internet, transfer data between local devices and a remote server, and access cloud software archives with its assistance.
We will discuss setting up FTP on any IIS server. Other programs, such as FileZilla, Home, Titan, or Ocean FTP Server, may also be used for work.
Installation process
First you need to go to the “Start” and enter the “Server Manager”, in it you need to select the addition of a role (point two).
Then go to the “Installation type” tab and click on the first category.
A list of servers will appear in the frame with pools, you need to click on the one you need and click “Next”.
Check the IIS server’s box under the server roles submenu. The graph will then enlarge and display the changed settings; you must then select FTP. The “FTP server” line was relocated to different tabs in other versions.
Then you will need to click and approve the installation.
Expand IIS Manager and on the left side of the submenu there is a folder named “Sites”. If you click on it with the right mouse button, a tooltip will pop up. In it, click on “Add FTP”.
The next step is to enter the name of the desired site and its full path to the storage directory.
You will be prompted to choose an IP address in a window. Verify that the IP address you supplied matches the one listed in the control panel. It’s also a good idea to choose “Without SSL” in the automatic launch option available below.
We will authenticate in the usual way, access is allowed to each user. We also recommend that you select all the suggested permissions.
About firewall settings
You must configure a firewall in order for external connections to occur swiftly and without interruption; this is done through the firewall program. Running it in advanced security mode is recommended. Following opening, you must locate the column with the rules for incoming connections in the left submenu, and then click on the creation of new rules on the right side.
In the “Wizard of creation” a predefined type of rules is selected, it is indicated by the FTP rule from the drop-down submenu.
In the submenu of predefined rules, we recommend that you check all lines.
In the “Action” submenu, you need to allow connections (first line). The configuration is over, it will come into operation as soon as the server is rebooted.
About FTP connections
It is possible to connect using the basic Windows program (“Explorer”) or using special programs, for example, FileZilla.
Connecting using the “Explorer” method, enter in the address line:
ftp://ip address
For example, ftp://177.118.25.63
A window will pop up, information is entered into it: an existing user is selected and a password is indicated.
Be aware that you can establish flexible connections to servers using the IIS server. Including granting anonymous access, modifying their rights, and sharing the viewable space with other clients.
In case of successful actions, a window with folders located on the server will open.
Attention: built-in servers have rich features. Including allow you to log, isolate users, support SSL, limit the number of login attempts.
How to set up Secure (SFTP)
are divided into two types: certified by an official commission and self-signed. The first type is considered safe, as the reliability is certified by the center responsible for certification.
If you take self-signed certificates, then users will receive warnings if they wish to enter the server.
Getting started with a self-signed certificate is simple:
1. You need to go to the IIS Manager window and select the “Certificates” option.
2. In the right submenu, select the creation of a self-signed type.
3. Enter its name.
To configure SFTP, you will need to return to the home page (click on FTP in the left submenu) and open the options, as in the screenshot.
The window that opens prompts you to make a choice of policy – specify the second option with the requirements of SSL connections.
To make connections over a secure channel, you need the WinSCP program:
• The protocol must be FTP;
• “Explicit” is selected as encryption from the drop-down menu;
• The name of the host will be IP or domain;
• If there were no settings for other ports, you need to select the 21st;
• Last login and password.
Once logged in, whatever the FTP directory contains will appear.
