Google Authenticator: Setup and Basic Operation

The steps for installing the Authenticator program on several mobile operating systems (Android, iOS, Phone), as a web browser extension, and for using in conjunction with the control panel are described in the instructions.

What it is?

Google Authenticator provides two-factor authentication (2FA). 2FA is an additional layer of used to validate users trying to access an online account. First, the user enters his username and password. Then, instead of being immediately granted access, it will have to provide other information, such as:

  • additional information (personal identification number (PIN), password, answers to “secret questions” or a specific keystroke sequence);
  • proof of ownership (usually, the user has something in their possession, such as a credit card, a smartphone, or a small hardware token);
  • biometric data (this category is a little more advanced and may include a biometric fingerprint pattern, iris scan, or voice print).

Thus, even if your password is stolen or your phone is lost, it is unlikely that someone else will gain access to your information.
