Domain Authority

Ever wonder how well your particular website places accordingly in Google search or other search engines compared to sites with similar content? Domain authority accomplishes this by comparing a websites’ “ranking strength” using a numerical score.

What Is It?

Domain authority is in essence a search engine ranking system. Its overall purpose is to provide a score that highlights the likelihood of a particular website ranking high on search engine result pages (i.e., SERPs).

A domain authority score is ranges from 1 to 100, with higher scores denoting a better search ability (i.e., higher rankings amongst search engine pages).  It is calculated by taking in account several factors – root domains, number of total links – that are then weighted accordingly and compiled into a numerical score, which can then be utilized as a website’s “ranking strength.”

Note that the domain authority – developed by Moz – is not utilized by any search engine (i.e., Google, Duckduckgo, Bing) nor does it affect these search engines.

How To Check Your Domain Authority

Go directly to either:

  • the Moz’s Link Explorer,
  • the Moz Bar (a SEO toolbar that is free to use),
  • the Keyword Explorer’s “SERP Analysis” component,
  • or https://moz.com/domain-analysis.

Domain Authority Scoring Methodology

Sites that have a good number of top-quality links – think Google, or Wikipedia, are generally top-ranked. Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum – i.e., the low-scoring side – you will find the websites of small businesses and other content sites with little to no in-bound link volume. It follows that when a new website becomes live, its respective domain authority score equates to 1.

Further, the domain authority score should not be analyzed as a stand-alone metric. Rather, its primary purpose is to be comparative, as opposed to absolute – meaning that you should compare your score to other similar websites, with the end goal of having a higher score relative to those sites, as opposed to having a high score in general.

Ultimately this means that there really isn’t a good or bad domain authority number. Remember also that the quality of in-bound link volume matters a great deal.

Domain Authority and Page Authority

The former – DA – measures ranking strength as compared to similar websites.  The latter – Page Authority – measures individual website performance.

How Can I Boost My Domain Authority Score?

In short, three words: Search, Engine, Optimization. Thus, to boost your DA score you need to enhance your website’s SEO by attempting to getting your website linked by other top-quality websites to drive traffic and better your rankings respectively.

How Does My Domain Authority Change?

There are several reasons why your DA score suddenly shifted:

  • The strength (or weakness) of your link index profile has not yet been calibrated by Moz’s index.
  • There was a shift in the link profiles of similar sites, causing a shakeup in the ranking process.
  • Your site was linked to by pages not included in Google search.
  • Your DA score is relatively low and is thus more impacted by any changes in the overall rankings.

Conclusion

So that wraps up Domain Authority! Keep in mind that your DA score is to be viewed as a comparative, as opposed to an absolute metric, and that they quality of your link profile index plays a significant role in your website’s ranking strength.
